If You Are A Coffee Drinker You Need To Read This

July 29, 2018

The U.S. Military has done extensive research on the effect of caffeine on mental acuity. The question that researchers have been trying to solve is how much caffeine is needed and how frequently does a soldier need to drink another cup of coffee to maintain a satisfactory level of alertness.

This deals directly with soldier readiness. It is of critical importance because soldiers may go for days without getting enough sleep or in some cases no sleep at all. This could also apply to you. Do you get enough sleep?

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends seven plus hours of sleep every night. So if you are not getting enough sleep should you drink some coffee to get your motor going. If so how much should you drink.

A 6 ounce cup of weak coffee has about 100 milligrams of caffeine, A strong cup has about 175 milligrams. The military is working on algorithms that will offer suggestions for the amount of caffeine that is needed for maximal mental alertness. To arrive at a dosing schedule the algorithm will predict someone's alertness based on their recent level of sleep and caffeine and then will compute the benefit of different amounts of caffeine to consume at different times of the day.

If this interests you the algorithm has not been released to the public but it will be available as a smart phone app. Until then you can access a simplified version of the mathematical model online at the website 2B Alert.
