Get Your Vitamin K

Vitamin K plays an important role in your body especially for bone health and blood coagulation. There are two main types of the vitamin.

 

Vitamin K1 is involved with blood clotting. It is abundant in many plant foods especially leafy greens as well as broccoli, Brussel sprouts and other cruciferous vegetables.

 

Vitamin K3 is important for calcium regulation in bones and blood vessels. It is synthesized by bacteria including some found in the intestinal tract. It is also found in animal foods.

 

The recommended adequate intake of Vitamin K IS 90 micrograms a day for women and 120 micrograms a day for men. Vitamin K can be a problem for people taking the anticoagulant drug Coumadin. If this applies to you please consult your doctor for advice about how much you can consume.
